Sarasota Magazine Cover illustration for the inaugural issue. Acrylics on illustration board. April 1987. A metaphorical pop-up magazine with varied local stories of a little city in Florida that was once the home of the circus folks.
"Table Hopping" Oil on illustration Board. 1984. The local critic drops in on various restaurants in a Florida town.
"Dining Out" Sarasota Magazine. Watercolor on illustration board. 1984. I had learned to work small for easy mailing. This is approximately 4" x 4". I liked to style the characters into large geometric shapes but unfortunately the woman who wrote the food column thought it a personal insult.
"Chinese Food" Sarasota Magazine. Watercolor on illustration board. 7" x 7". I started with the main character's eyes and worked it out from there, with no particular idea and one thing led to another and it was done. I think the Chinese man is explaining how chopsticks work to the lady from Jersey City.
Italian Food" Sarasota Magazine. 1987. Watercolor on a tiny illustration board. 6" x 6" William Baily's horizontal compositions were an inspiration. "Who is the little man tossing the potato chip?" , someone asked me.
"Something Fishy" Sarasota Magazine. Oil on illustration board. At the time I saw a lot of seniors that looked like this. Now I am one.
New Business Magazine. I should have painted a $100 bill. The story was about a lot of new money steaming into the seaside Florida scene. This illustration was more like chump change. At the time, I must have been oblivious.
"The Fountain of Youth" Clubhouse Magazine. 1987. Watercolor and Acrylics on illustration board. An article about the many Florida fountains, claimed by various promoters as authentic. Visitors who taste the water report a strong, unpleasant mineral flavor, often described as smelling like sulfur.
"The New Arrival" Sarasota Magazine. Acrylic on illustration board. 1989. Article probing the anxiety of finding social standing in Florida. It helps to have a sizable bank account.
"Anxiety Attack" Sarasota Magazine. Oil on illustration board. I framed it on the wall at home and my daughter said she was afraid to walk past it at night.

"Arcadia and the Rays" Sarasota Magazine article about AIDS and three hemophiliac brothers from Arcadia who received tainted blood transfusions and how the town reacted out of fear and ignorance. 1987.

"No Deal" New Business Magazine. Convincing the Committee to Invest...There was actually an investors club who met and auditioned business proposals. The irony was that few ever saw money, but were generally greeted contemptuously, ridiculed and made fun of. Sounds like a fun club.

"Employee Gripes about Company Rewards" Gulf Shore Life. The airline rewarded workers with cheap ribbons and medals, while the corporate profits suggested better.
